United have suffered play-off heartbreak in the last two seasons but midfield ace Mansell – outstanding in the 4-2 win over Rochdale – is backing Martin Ling’s new-look yellows to go one better this term.

United's popular number seven - voted 2012 player of the year by Gulls supporters - is now in his seventh season at Torquay.

Mansell told South West Sports News: “Last season is gone and forgotten.

“This is a new season and we have the same aim as we had this time last year and that is to win promotion.

“We have got some new lads in and they’ve settled in well, done well and we are looking an exciting prospect.

“The main thing for us is to keep injuries within the squad down to a minimum. We’re a relatively small squad and if we lose players to injury we could lose ground and we don’t want that.”

As they prepare to face Port Vale, Mansell added: “It’s always important to get your first three points, and the manner in which we did it was pleasing as well. I thought our first half performance was excellent. We passed the ball well and looked a real threat going forward.

“We tend to sit back a bit in the second half and invite pressure when should continue to attack – but fortunately this time we took our chances.”
