Bideford head into tonight’s Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West top frame clash at home to Gosport Borough buoyed by a 4-0 win over Bridgwater Town.
Saturday’s emphatic Sports Ground victory maintains the leaders’ five-point advantage over second placed Hungerford ahead of tonight’s big match in north Devon.
Sean Joyce’s table-toppers extended their impressive unbeaten run to 14 league matches thanks to goals from in-form Kevin Squire, top scorer Matt Andrew and Sean Downing.
Delighted Joyce said: “The lads were superb. We’ve scored 50 goals in the league now and are just two short of our 58 points total for the whole of last season and we still have 16 games of this season to go. Understandably I am fairly happy with that because that was our first target, points-wise.”
Squire is lording it at Bideford. Saturday's double - in the 10th and 80th minutes - took the striker's goal tally to six in seven league games while Downing has netted five in the same spell.
Andrew – who made it 2-0 after 25 minutes on Saturday – has now scored a dozen league and cup goals for the Robins.
Downing’s 55th minute header made it 3-0 and Squire, who opened his account with a crisp volley, capped an impressive Bideford performance by adding the finishing touch to a sweeping move involving Andrew, Matt Bye and Ian Sampson.
Alex Pike's fourth placed Boro warmed up for tonight’s trip with a 1-0 home win over sixth placed Thatcham courtesy’s of an 81st minute winner from veteran former Portsmouth and Leicester City striker Steve Claridge.
Tonight’s floodlit match at the Sports Ground kicks off at 1945.
