NON LEAGUE Weston-super-Mare 0 Truro City 2

Truro City deservedly claimed their first Blue Square Bet South win of the new season at rainswept Weston-super-Mare.

Summer find Kieffer Moore and fellow striker Stewart Yetton scored with headers for injury-hit City, without skipper Jake Ash and ace Andy Watkins.

Player-manager Lee Hodges belied his 38 years by starting at centre half in place of Ash while Yetton took over Watkins’ striking role to partner Moore, who shrugged off a hamstring strain to start.

The 20-year-old former South Devon College striker will be glad he did, after netting in second goal in successive matches.

Recalled Hodges – who played for over an hour after replacing Ash on Saturday – lofted in a free kick from just inside the Weston half in the 31st minute following a foul on livewire Les Afful by Seagulls right back Jamie Price.

Price was yellow carded for the foul but Weston paid the price as six foot five target man Moore threw himself at the ball and scored with a powerful header.

Truro were good value for their half time lead but craved a second goal to reward their spells of dominance.

That came in the 67th minute as City countered at pace down the left and Yetton met Afful’s pinpoint cross with a text book downward header that gave home keeper Lloyd Irish little chance.

Irish, who had made a superb save to keep out Yetton’s shot on the spin in the 35th minute, made an even better stop to deny Moore leading up to the second goal.

In a frenetic spell, when Weston looked their most dangerous, City keeper Tim Sandercombe made a reflex stop to deny Nabi Diallo.

That sparked City’s strikers and Moore was denied as he went solo on the counter.

Seconds later Yetton crossed for his strike partner, whose shot spun wide.

Any thoughts City may rue those misses were swept away when Yetton made it 2-0.

Arran Pugh was in imperious form alongside Hodges in the middle of the back four and nearly opened the scoring with a direct header from Adam Kelly’s 19th minute corner.

Keeper Irish needed to flap that one around the post as City set out their stall to attack as much as they could in driving rain.

After the game delighted Hodges said “I am obviously pleased to get three points on the board.

“I was saying how well we were playing and how we deserved more points from the opening three games. This was much more like it, the lads did brilliantly today and got their reward: the win.

“Pughie was magnificent at the back, Les had another great game, both the full backs and of course the two boys upfront did the business. It was another excellent, all-round team display.”
