The former Middlesex, Hampshire and Northamptonshire all-rounder has been player/coach of Italy and has now taken over as Dorset’s Head of Performance.

Devon’s route to Sunday’s NCCA Cluberly Championship final against Buckinghamshire has been an unconventional one.

The county began the season with a new coaching team, no professional, a team of mostly untried youngsters and with the sole aim of trying to avoid relegation from Western Division One.

Matt Thompson hopes that an extra date will be added to his farewell tour as he prepares for retirement from National Counties cricket.

National Counties Trophy winners Dorset will be attempting to complete a rare white ball competition double at today's T20 Finals Day at Wormsley.

Norfolk face Oxfordshire in the first semi-final at 1000 with the winners meeting the winners of the second semi-final between Dorset and Northumberland in the final at 1630.

Dorset County Cricket Club head coach Paul Lawrence wants his players to enjoy the occasion as well as trying to bring home the county’s first silverware in 15 years when they take on Shropshire in the National Counties Trophy final at Chester Boughton Hall today (1100).

Dorset’s last title was the National Counties Championship – then Minor Counties Championship – in 2010 but they have not appeared in the final of the 50 overs competition since 2006 and their sole success in the format came back in 1988 when they beat Cambridgeshire by two wickets in the final at Weymouth.
