Staffordshire thought their defence was over almost before it had begun after they suffered a second double washout against Cumbria at Carlisle on Monday.
Having played just two of their scheduled six matches – a win and a defeat against Northumberland at Burslem on Sunday – Staffordshire missed the cut for a place in the Super 12s on May 19 because of an inferior run rate.
But Northumberland, who finished second in Group One, played both former Leicestershire all-rounder Jacques du Toit and former Durham and Ireland wicketkeeper/batter Stuart Poynter in both of their matches against Cheshire at Oxton on Monday.
Under NCCA regulations, counties are only permitted to play one player with a combined total of more then 40 first-class and List A appearances. Du Toit’s tally comes to 93 and Poynter’s to 94.
Poynter made 34 and du Toit 51 in the first match at Oxton which helped Northumberland to a four wickets win and helped them leapfrog Staffordshire’s in the final group.
But their error in playing the two experienced former county players cost them that place and saw them join Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Suffolk, Wales NC, Wiltshire, Devon and Cheshire as the sides eliminated.
The venues and draw for the Super 12 stage will be confirmed by the end of the week.
