Thanks to Herring Wales recovered from 107 for six to reach 260 all out with extras being the next highest scorer with 40. Northop Hall teenager Josh Andrady chipped in with 28 on his Wales debut.
Cardiff seamer Osama Subhan, another debutant, took two early wickets for Wales but the experienced pair of Richard Kaufman and Jonny Cater took Oxfordshire to 11 for three with an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 51.
Former Devon captain Matt Thompson made his first championship century in six years against Wiltshire at Sandford.
Thompson made 132 from 235 balls and shared a fourth wicket partnership of 111 with locum professional Wayne White, the former Lancashire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire all-rounder, who made 62.
Sixteen wickets fell on an eventful first day at Bridgnorth where Shropshire dismissed Cornwall for 249 before they replied with 179 for six.
Tom Wells, the former Leicestershire all-rounder, top scored with 87 which, with a half century from opener Charlie Kent and 45 from James Turpin countered a six wicket haul from slow left-armer Warrick Fynn.
Fynn, who played first-class cricket in his native South Africa then contributed a brisk 41 with the bat before he became the first of three victims for former Derbyshire and Essex all-rounder Greg Smith.
Former Leicestershire off-spinner Jigar Naik and left-arm seamer Brad Currie took four wickets apiece to help Dorset restrict Herefordshire to 213 at Bashley.
Mahaaz Ahmed, with his maiden half century, and David Ball contributed of the 125 runs in an uneven innings in which seven batsman scraped together 24.
Captain Luke Webb led Dorset’s solid response, making an unbeaten 44 in their 94 for one.
Defending champions Berkshire again demonstrated why they are unbeaten in the championship since 2014 by hitting back strongly with the ball after Cheshire’s former Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire slow left-armer David Wainwright has kept them in check with a six wicket haul at Finchampstead.
Berkshire appeared to have laid the foundations for a large total when opener Archie Carter made 84. But Wainwright snared Carter and with off-spinner chipping in with three wickets Berkshire were dismissed for 275.
Cheshire ended the day in disarray at 38 for five with off-spinner Euan Woods taking two of the wickets.
