First Rudge took six for 41 to dismiss Oxfordshire for 135 after Herefordshire captain Luke Tulacz had won the toss, then opening batter Hardinges made his maiden century in National Counties cricket to help Herefordshire establish a lead of at the end of the first day.
Left-hander Hardinges has been a prolific run-scorer for Malvern College where his father Mark, the former Gloucestershire all-rounder, is Director of Sport, and he was making just his second appearance for Herefordshire having made 65 in the second innings of his debut against Devon last month.
At Thame he helped Herefordshire to pass Oxfordshire’s first innings total with three wickets down and compiled a stylish century from 167 balls with 19 fours before he was bowled by Oxfordshire captain Max Mannering to the next ball he faced.
Hardinges shared a fourth wicket partnership of 100 with Roshan Venkataraman (6) who played his second excellent supporting role of the day having taking four for 54 earlier.
Oxfordshire’s total would have been even more meagre but for a last wicket partnership of 41 between Ben Lucking, with a maiden half-century, and Oliver Armstrong who dug in for a 21-ball duck before he gave Venkataraman a return catch.
Herefordshire ended the day with a lead of 116 with three wickets intact.
A century from Charlie Dunnett helped Berkshire to 295 all out against Wiltshire in the other Western Division One match at Henley.
Dunnett added 81 for the third wicket with James Isbell (62) although their progress was interrupted by lengthy delays after the original ball went out of shape and the quarter-seam burst on its replacement. The umpires had difficulty in finding a suitable alternative from their cache of balls so, with the approval of the captains and coaches, an acceptable replacement was found among Wiltshire’s batch of practice balls.
After Isbell was bowled by Sam Freestone, Berkshire slipped to 125 for six before Dunnett added 109 for the seventh wicket with his captain Andy Rishton (47).
Freestone finished with a career-best five for 81 with Warwickshire left-arm spinner taking two wickets in his first appearance in the competition in four years.
Wiltshire made a solid start to their first innings with Jack Mynott (51 not out) and Cyrus Shafi (24 not out) compiling an unbroken first wicket stand of 79.
Staffordshire seamer Sam Atkinson took career-best seven for 51 but Northumberland fought back hard at the South Northumberland club in Eastern Division One.
Only Alasdair Appleby (41) topped 30 after Northumberland had batted first with former Warwickshire Academy player Atkinson taking his second wicket haul in the competition.
Staffordshire’s batters also struggled against Matt Oswell (four for 45) and they were 61 for six before Dan Lincoln (44) and Atkinson came to the rescue with a seventh wicket partnership of 68. Staffordshire were still 26 behind when Lincoln and Liam Hurt went in quick succession but Atkinson (46 not out) and debutant Joe Thorne (15 not out) nudged them into a lead of six with two wickets intact.
Honours were also shared by Suffolk and Cambridgeshire on an attritional day in the East Anglia derby at Copdock.
Suffolk were dismissed for 244 thanks to half-centuries from Josh Cantrell (87 not out) and Ollie Burle (57). Tom Harper (33) was the only batter to reach 30 against a tight team bowling performance from Cambridgeshire led by Ben Cliverd with three for 23 in his five overs.
Cambridgeshire reduced the deficit by 65 for the loss of two wickets with Callum Guest unbeaten on 37 at the close.
Dominic Chatfield became the first Hertfordshire opening batter in 20 years to carry his bat against Norfolk at Hertford in Eastern Division Two.
Chatfield was responsible for more than half of Hertfordshire’s 297 all out as he finished unbeaten on 152, only the 11th instance of a batter from the county carrying his bat and the first since Spencer Fan made 18 not out in a total of 164 against Buckinghamshire at Gerrards Cross in 2006.
Jacob Gordon weighed in with a half-century while Hamidullah Qadri checked Hertfordshire’s progress with four for 95 but Norfolk could not dislodge Chatfield who batted five-and-a-half hours, faced 249 balls and struck 22 fours.
Seamer Jake Whickham then had a dream start to his debut by having Sam Arthurton, one of the most prolific run-scorers in National Counties cricket, LBW with his first ball. Whickham added the wickets of Nathan Muggeridge and Ben Wilcox to leave Norfolk on 46 for three at the close of play.
There was no play before lunch and an early finish due to rain in the other Eastern Division Two match at Netherfield where Cumbria reached 178 for four after they had been put in by Bedfordshire.
In the 56.4 overs that were bowled Nathan Waterston followed up his maiden Championship century against Norfolk with 79 before his was bowled to give seamer Shaynan Patel his first National Counties cricket.
Cumbria skipper Michael Slack was unbeaten on 44 when the rain returned.
Shropshire batter Seb Scott made his maiden century against Dorset at Whitchurch in Western Division Two before former Leicestershire and Glamorgan pace bowler Roman Walker had the visitors in early trouble.
Scott’s 114 and an opening partnership of 74 between Harry Chandler (44) and Will Tarrant (52) laid the foundations for Shropshire’s 323 after they had batted first.
Seamer Josiah Edy and slow left-armers Mo Abbas and Connor Smith shared nine wickets between them but Dorset then ran into trouble as Walker dismissed four of their top five, including Cameron Basey and Alex Eckland for ducks to leave them 47 for four. Walker has now taken 19 wickets in the first innings of his last three Championship matches with power to add.
Former Kent batter Alex Blake continued his rich vein of form for Cornwall with back-to-back centuries, the latest against Cheshire at Redruth.
Blake added 102 for the third wicket with Alfie MacDonald (58) and 62 for the fourth wicket with another Kent-based player, Will MacVicar (59) which took Cornwall to 347 all out.
Seamer Ben Ellis removed Henry Murray and Henry Dobson cheaply but Alex Money (28 not out) steered Cheshire to 55 for two.
