COUNTIES CRICKET Church century for Wiltshire

The first Championship century of the season was scored by Wiltshire’s Dylan Church in their Western Division Two match against Herefordshire at Corsham.

Church made a competition-best 116 and shared a third wicket partnership of 131 with his captain, Ed Young, and an opening stand of 82 with James Degg (38) but Wiltshire failed to capitalise and were dismissed for 331.

The last seven wickets, starting with Church’s dismissal, went down for 76 with the wickets shared around.

Herefordshire openers Ben Chapman-Lilley and Rehaan Edavalath reduced the deficit by 49 by the close.

Shropshire opener George Hargrave made up for lost time at the St George’s club in Oakengates where he ended the day nine short of his third century in as many innings against Dorset.

Only 17 balls were bowled in the first brief passage of play but when the players returned after a delay of five hours, Hargrave, who made 115 and 201 at Wimborne last season, again tucked into Dorset’s bowling.

He shared a second wicket partnership of 103 with former Worcestershire batter Tom Fell (42) and an unbroken third wicket stand of 75 with Andre Bradford (38 not out) to take Shropshire to 186 for two from 49 overs.

Devon, last season’s beaten finalists, reached 177 for six on another rain-shortened day against Berkshire at the North Devon club in Instow in Western Division One.

Lawrence Walker made a half-century on his Championship debut and former Somerset and Kent all-rounder Calum Haggett finished unbeaten on 30 with seamers Tommy Sturgess and Toby Greatwood sharing four of the wickets.

Oxfordshire’s in-form batter Hayden Rossouw fell 14 short of a century on his Championship debut against Cornwall at Helston.

Rossouw’s 86 and 61 from Luke Hayes were well-supported by Rossouw’s brother Tristan (48 not out) and Freddie Smith (36) which helped Oxfordshire to 299 all out.

Former Kent all-rounder Alex Blake ended the day unbeaten on 34 as Oxfordshire closed on 61 for one.

Two debutants impressed at Peterborough where Matt Rees, a pace bowler from Castleford, took three for 36 for Cambridgeshire to help dismiss Hertfordshire for 201.

Chelmsford batter Ben Clifford top scored with 69 on his Hertfordshire debut with former Essex man Jack Plom weighing in with a useful 37 down the order.

Cambridgeshire closed on 66 for two with the experienced Wayne White contributing 45 of the runs and with power to add on day two.

Just 36 overs were bowled at Jesmond between a late start and early finish with Cumbria reaching 108 for four against Northumberland.

There was a maiden wicket for Durham’s Mitchell Killeen for Northumberland while his Durham team-mate Stan McAlindon was unbeaten on 21 on his Cumbria debut.

Buckinghamshire made a stuttering start to their title defence against Lincolnshire at Sleaford.

The defending champions were dismissed for 220 in their first innings after they opted to bat first and were indebted to a half-century from Cameron Parsons after the top order had failed.

Buckinghamshire were 75 for six until Parsons and Ed Bragg (29) shored up the innings with a seventh wicket partnership of 89.

There was further resistance from Conner Haddow (23 not out) with seamer Matty Mills the pick of Lincolnshire’s attack with four for 57 on his Championship debut.

Lincolnshire ended the day 100 behind with eight first innings wickets intact with Ben Wright making an unbeaten half-century and sharing an unbroken third wicket stand of 64 with captain Tom Keast.

Rain prevented play until after tea in the other Eastern Division One match at Checkley where Staffordshire captain James Kettleborough made 48 against his former county, Bedfordshire.

Kettleborough, who was awarded his county cap before the start of play, shared an opening partnership of 77 with Matthew Morris (33) before he became the first of two wickets for Sam Jarvis.

Bedfordshire gave a debut to former Staffordshire and Nottinghamshire all-rounder Sam Kelsall who had debutant Joe Hawkins LBW as Staffordshire closed on 130 for four from 45 overs.
