Four students and three recent graduates are among the University of Bath-associated athletes, coaches and support staff who will be proudly representing their countries at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which begins today.

Bill Whiteley Sporting Scholar Matthew Ward will be racing for Team Scotland in the swimming pool, while his Aquatics GB Bath Performance Centre team-mates Cam Brooker, Jack Skerry and Jacob Peters – at his third Games – are competing for Team England.

Dorset batter/wicketkeeper Joe Eckland and Cambridgeshire leg-spinner Mo Rizvi have been given the opportunity to resurrect their careers with first-class counties.

Eckland has signed a short-term contract with Gloucestershire - and Rizvi with Leicestershire - for the Metro Bank Cup.

Johnny Connell, who helped Berkshire win the NV Play National Counties Trophy on Sunday, has signed for Somerset for their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign.

Connell has been in sparkling form for Berkshire this season with a century against Sussex in a T20 Showcase match against Sussex at Horsham in May the real eye-catcher.
