Berkshire dodged the rain to open their Durant Cricket National Counties Championship campaign with a ten wickets victory over Devon at Instow in Western Division One.It was the only positive result in an opening round blighted by bad weather with no play possible on the final day of five of the eight matches.

In Western Division One, Berkshire were frustrated by rain which cut short proceedings at Instow after they had overtaken Devon’s 222 and built a lead of 61 when the weather closed in.Calum Haggett prolonged Devon’s resistance in the morning with a half-century while former Cornwall seamer Tommy Sturgess finished with four for 48 in his first Championship bowl for Berkshire.

Devon, last season’s National Counties Championship finalists and Western Division One champions, begin their campaign against Berkshire, the 2022 national champions, at the North Devon club in Instow today.Devon are missing Jamie Stephens, their red ball captain, who is injured having slipped in the field during last week’s National Counties Trophy quarter-final defeat by Cheshire.
