It's matchday Wednesday for sporting students across the country with scores of British Universities & Colleges Sport fixtures and the Daily Mail RBS Schools Cup rugby competition second round.
The BUCS competition – a regular midweek fixture – has still to get into full swing but there are plenty of hockey, lacrosse and rugby union fixtures commencing tomorrow.
• University of Exeter men’s hockey first team begin their BUCS national title defence at home to Oxford (University Sports Park 1500).
Exeter beat Durham 4-3 in a seven goal thriller last March to claim the BUCS men’s hockey Championship for a second time in three seasons.
Tomorrow UoE start out on their championship trail with the first BUCS Premier South fixture of the new term.
The women’s BUCS Premier South match between Exeter and Oxford begins at 1300 at the Sports Park.
University of Exeter will field 150 teams in the 2012-13 BUCS league programme.
• On a Somerset sporting field, Millfield, play their first Daily Mail RBS Schools Under 18 Cup rugby tie when they host Sexey’s School in tomorrow’s second round (1430).
Millfield School won the Under 15 Cup in 2009 at Twickenham.
Now Millfield School director of rugby John Mallett - a former Bath and England prop - is keen for the under 18 first XV to be granted a similar opportunity to see how far they can progress in the popular national schools and colleges knockout competition.
• England Rugby captain Chris Robshaw is an Old Millfieldian and skippered the school's first XV.
