KJM SPORT MATCH REPORT St Blazey 1 Saltash United 5

Never mind the goals, feel the quality of the performance. That was manager Macca Brown’s message after watching his blossoming young Ashes side romp to victory at Blaise Park on Wednesday night.

Aaron Goulty, with his first goal for the club, gave Saltash a 27th minute lead and they went on to dominate the first half without adding to their advantage.

St Blazey had a great opportunity to equalise five minutes into the second half but substitute Isaac McCue’s spot kick was comfortably saved by Jordan Duffey.

Four minutes later Goulty scored his and Saltash’s second goal and when Joe Preece made it 3-0 soon afterwards, the visitors were on cloud nine.

Jordan Ewing, who had a superb game leading the line, smashed in a wonder goal to make it 4-0 after 72 minutes and was on target again two minutes later for the Ashes’ fifth.

Substitute Ben Waters fired an injury time consolation for Blazey but it was far too little, too late.

Saltash boss Macca Brown said: “On the face of it, it seemed like two very different halves of football, but I don’t actually think they were that dissimilar to be honest and I was impressed with both of them in their own right.

“We know away from home for some reason we haven’t been good enough this season. I think I said a few weeks ago we had to respect away fixtures more and last night before the game we called for personality and we certainly got that.”

“The scoreline will maybe stun people and is obviously the headline, but it was the nature of the performance that pleased me the most as it was more of the same from Saturday v Portishead.

“I know in the end we scored five goals but even if it had finished 1-0 I would be just as pleased because we performed properly.

“The danger is people start getting carried away after one result, and let’s be honest after 50 minutes when we were stood there at 1-0 waiting for St Blazey to dispatch their penalty, it was a very different game and it could have gone anywhere had they scored.

“I felt we were comfortable and in control of our performance up to that point but Blazey had come out with a bit of fire and were asking a few more questions of us which led to the penalty.

“If they score the penalty the game could have gone in a different direction so that’s why I won’t get drawn into so called corners being turned, so it was a big moment.

“We called for personality and it was a great save by Jordan and a few minutes later we were 2-0 up and that’s football.”

“The last half an hour was obviously fantastic, the players were relishing the game and were so clinical.

“I don’t think we had one player over the age of 25 on the pitch before the flurry of subs at the end.

“I think JT (Josh Toulson) was the oldest player for us which is remarkable for me to say that given he was with me at 16.

“And I say it every week but in Tylor (Love-Holmes), Ethan (Wright), Sam (Cox), Kia (Kieran O’Melia) and Tom (Huyton) that’s five players who are 18 or younger, and it’s important they taste performances like that as part of their development and they really did relish the challenge of playing some experienced players.

“Joe Preece and Coxy were superb. Joe was excellent all night and Sam really grew as the game went on, particularly after half time. It was his first start of the season which has been a long time coming for him, but you could see he loved it.

“The challenge is now obviously doing it all again, turning up ready for another tough away trip on Saturday.

“I’ve seen a few things saying we’ve turned a corner or we’ve turned it round and I know they mean well but it really isn’t as simple as that.

“We started where we started and I’ve personally seen nothing but progress since day one, corners have been turned every day not after just one result.

“Success doesn’t move in a smooth, upward trajectory, there are always set backs along the way.

“We are only a few months in and we have to now show a level of consistency that’s been lacking, especially in the league where we have to start climbing the table.”
