DAVE'S DIARY: JUNE

Cornwood and southwestsportsnews fave dave ended a shower spoiled June with their own rays of sunshine.

The Devon League A Division side got back on track with a 40-run sunshine home win over South Devon and then a day later dave scored a rare, special century in a friendly against Plymouth Corporate Officers.

"It was only my third 100 in 21 years and what made it special for me was that my son, Luke Petherbridge was the non-facing batsman when I hit my 100th run."

In the league win over South Devon, Scott Mansfield scored an unbeaten 56 to help Cornwood reach 155-9 and then the Oak Park side skittled South Devon out for 115 with Aizaz Cheema taking 5-30 and both Andy "Bones" Bees and Kevin Willcock 2-22.

Cornwood were hoping for third time lucky when they were due to visit local rivals Tavistock in the Devon League after back to back washouts. But rain again decided to ruin Cornwood's day - three in a row.

Unfortunately hail - followed by rain - caused Cornwood (141) to slide off the Devon League A Division summit at the start on the month when their home match against Braunton (14-2) was washed out.

More bad weather caused the cancellation of Cornwood's match at Brixham last Saturday while promotion rivals Bradninch and Bovey Tracey both won (see results section for latest table).

"We were coming down the pavilion steps (at Brixham) when it started to rain before you knew it the pitch was flooded - and with it went our chances of playing," said Dave with a loud sigh.

Pethers is now resembling more of a weatherman than a cricketer.

According to our nearest and dearest Oak Park resembled a "winter wonderland" during the hailstorms which blighted their match against Braunton.

Dave said: "I got whacked on the back of the head when I was fielding at gulley - then the next thing I knew it just came heaving down, hail first then rain.

"It was incredible - especially to see hail covering the ground in June!"

Kevin "Wilko" Willcock had top scored with 53 for the home side while Braunton took 15 overs to reach 14-2 penned in by home overseas star Aizaz Cheema (2-6) and medium pace ace Andy Bees.

Dave swung into June action with a home Twenty20 cup win over Plymouth Civil Service at Oak Park but they have lost subsequent games, at Plymstock last Friday, and at home to Devon League leaders Plympton last night.
