| DAVE'S DIARY - COME WHAT MAY |
|
Dave and his Cornwood first team mates ended the merry month of May on top of the table following their 45-run win at Chudleigh, where Kevin "Wilko" Willcock top scored with 36. Dave maintained his record of still not being bowled - finishing the innings on 23 not out in Cornwood's 125.Andy Bees (3-17) and Aizaz Cheema (3-25) helped skittle Chudleigh out for 80. Cornwood's fourth successive league win followed a 41-run home win over Barton and a magnificent haul of 8-24 by Aizaz, who also top scored with 37 in the new leaders' 150. Dave said: "Obviously the day belonged to Aizaz but I got a wicket and another not out. They are calling me master red inker because I have yet to be out so far this season." The Cornies third league win in a row put them four points clear at the summit. Dave admitted the "beer tasted better" after their first home game, a 40-run win over Alphington, when our boy also claimed his first wicket of the season! Skipper Jason Hall cracked 77 and Martyn Cooksley 71 as CCC amassed 252-7 and before overseas player Aizaz took four wickets as Alphington were bowled out for 212.Willcock also bagged a couple of wickets as the Cornies won in the sun. Cornwood made it two league wins in a row and Dave took five wickets as they won by two wickets at Bradninch ahead of a thrilling eight-run home Cockspur Cup victory over Truro when he was economy personified, 9-3-9-0. Opener Duncan Boase scored 37 and third man Chris Beaumont top scored with 47. Cornwood's win at Bradninch put them level top with Bovey Tracey ahead of the eagerly anticipated home game against Barton. Cornwood's Devon League A Division campaign began with defeat at Bovey - marking a momentous anniversary for our beloved "look for a lump in the pitch" bowler. It was the start of Dave's 21st summer with Cornwood after spells at Stoke Climsland and Yelverton.Although Hall's first XI finished their pre-season warm up with a six-wicket win over local rivals Ivybridge at the Oak Park track of the now universally famed Cornwood CC, off-spinner Dave was not so happy with his personal performance. "Team played well. Note to self: must bowl better" was his terse beer-stained text to southwestsportsnews hq following the warm up win. He was equally disappointed at his display in Cornwood's opening defeat, musing post-match: "I didn't shave, changed my style of socks, did all I could think to change my luck with the ball but it didn't help. "At the end of the day we have come up here, I got two not out, didn't bowl well in any of my three overs and had to pay a fiver for the privilege! That sums it up really." Characteristically Dave could still manage a smile at the end of the day - and a pint of cider. Two Daves: Pethers, pictured centre, sharing a lighter moment with team-mate Tall.
