HORNETS START TOP FLIGHT FIXTURES AT PLYMOUTH

firebrands versus university of exeter hockeyNewly promoted Exeter & Culm Vale Hornets begin life in the 2011-2012 Davis Wood Hockey League top flight at Plymouth Marjon on Saturday October 1.

Hornets, runners-up to Premier Two champions University of Exeter B, play their first Premier One match at UCP Marjon and then face a tough first home test against University of Exeter A at St James School on the second Saturday of the new 2011-2012 season, October 8.

University of Exeter A – whose first team will play in the England Hockey League Premier Division next term – finished fourth in last season’s regional men’s hockey league top flight.

Cardiff & UWIC topped the table, as runaway champions, and have been promoted to the EHL Men’s Conference West.

The knock-on effect was promotion for University of Exeter B and Hornets with only one side, Gloucester City relegated to Premier Two. Gloucester begin their bid to bounce back to the top flight away to Westbury & United Banks.

University of Exeter’s A and B teams both begin the new season at home. The University A team host Bristol club Firebrands (pictured) while the students' B team play Devizes.

Robinsons, runners-up to Cardiff & UWIC, start the new campaign with a local derby at TeamBath Buccaneers A while Bristol University, third in the table last term, are at home to Exeter based Isca, who ended the season on a winning run culminating in retaining the men’s Devon Cup.

The outstanding Premier One fixture on opening day pits Taunton Vale at home to the only remaining Welsh club in the top flight, Cardiff University.

The first half of the season is scheduled to finish on Saturday December 10, restarting – after the annual mid-season, midwinter break – on Saturday January 14, 2012.

Next season is due to finish on Saturday March 24.
