Cornwall’s Emily Toy won the 2015 English girls’ championship at Sheringham Golf Club yesterday with a four round total of four under par 288.
The 17-year-old from Carlyon Bay lcinched the England Golf title by two shots from girl internationals Lizzie Prior (Burhill) and Emma Allen (Meon Valley).
After 36 holes Allen had raced to a seven-shot halfway lead, thanks to rounds of seven-under 66 and 71. But she slipped back with scores of 78, 75 while Toy forged ahead with back-to-back 72s.
“I didn’t really worry about what Emma was doing, I was just concentrating on what I could do,” said Toy, who is a past winner of the Cornwall women's amateur championship.
The Cornwall teenage ace went into the final round one shot off the pace and said: “That was good, I like to come from the back.
“Winning is the next step forward. Winning the county championship was my previous best and this moves me on to the next level. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet.”
Toy closed in on the national title with three birdies and an eagle three on the third, where she holed out from 15 feet but refused to get ahead of herself: “I wanted to stay in the moment. I was just taking every shot as it came if you get too far ahead you can lose it.”
